A is a form of government maintained by a state or country whose sovereignty is based on popular consent and whose governance is based on popular representation and control. Several definitions stress the importance of the rule of law as among the requirements for a republic. In some republics, like Switzerland and San Marino, the head of state is not a single person but a committee of several persons holding that office. In many republics the head of state is termed president. Other titles that have been used are consul, doge, archon among many others.
